Ход урока

1. Ученики обсуждают, что значит слово Paralympic (“parallel to the Olympic Games”), для кого проводятся эти игры. Затем они слушают отрывок из интервью и отвечают на вопросы.

— Who are the Paralympic Games for?

— The Paralympic Summer and Winter Games are the most important competitions for world-class athletes with a physical disability or blind and are held every four years.

— What sports are there in the programme of the Paralympic Games?

— The Paralympic Games competition includes 19 sports. Fifteen of them are shared with the Olympic Games, they are swimming, sailing, cycling, athletics and so on. The other four are exclusively Paralympic. Four “unique” sports are played only at the Paralympic Games.

2. Ученики слушают текст со зрительной опорой и вставляют услышанные пропущенные слова. В зависимости от подготовленности класса текст можно прослушать целиком, по параграфам или предложениям. Текст слушается столько раз, сколько необходимо для выполнения упражнения.

The first Games for athletes with a disability were held in 1948 in Stoke Mandeville, England. On the day of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in London, the first competition for wheelchair athletes was organised.

Four years later, athletes from the Netherlands joined the Games; thus, the Paralympic Games were born.

Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organised for the first time in Rome in 1960, immediately after the Olympic Games. They are considered the first Paralympic Games. About 400 athletes from 23 countries competed in 8 sports, 6 of which are still included in the Paralympic Competition Programme. Since then the Paralympic Games have been organised every four years. The Paralympic Games have been held in the same year as the Olympic Games but usually in another country. In 1976, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden.

A new page in Paralympic history was written when, in 1988, the Paralympic Games were held immediately following the Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, using the same facilities as the Olympic Games. Since this date the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games have followed the Olympic Games using the same stadiums, village and in many cases sponsors and organisational structures.

3. 1) Ученики слушают тексты один раз и соотносят их с картинками.

1. It is a new sport. It began in Canada in 1977. Men and women athletes with a physical disability can participate in it. Wheelchair rugby is a combination of rules and skills required in basketball and rugby. The games are held on a basketball ground, and the balls which are used in wheelchair rugby and in volleyball are alike. Each team consists of 4 players.

2. It is a competitive sport that is played by individuals, pairs or teams of three. It is a sport for people who are wheelchair users. It is played in indoor halls. The players throw the coloured balls as closer as possible to a white ball. The ball can be thrown by the hand or foot. Boccia requires concentration, coordination, accuracy and team work.

3. It is an exclusively Paralympic sport. It is a team sport in which only blind athletes can participate. It is played on a volleyball ground with the ball, which has a bell inside. It helps the athletes to orient. Therefore, while play is in progress, the gym is completely silent. Goalball needs to be strong, quick and had good coordination skills. It became a Paralympic sport in 1980 in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

4. Ученики высказывают своё мнение о необходимости проведения Паралимпийских игр. Вы можете выразить своё мнение по этому вопросу, обязательно подчеркнув необходимость проведения игр для спортсменов-инвалидов, а также ежедневной помощи людям с ограниченными физическими возможностями.

Домашнее задание: рабочая тетрадь, упр. 2 (ученики выбирают один из текстов); книга для чтения, упр. 4 (упр. 4.5) — дополнительное) (на основе этого упражнения развивается умение предвосхищать содержание текста, догадываться о значении незнакомых слов по картинкам, контексту, читать с целью извлечения необходимой информации и с целью полного понимания текста).

A There were competitions in 19 different sports at the Paralympic Games in London. Our sportsmen took part in 12 sports. The Paralympic team consisted of 182 sportsmen and sportswomen. Russian sportsmen won 36 gold, 38 silver and 28 bronze medals. Russian track and field athletes got more gold medals than any other athletes. Russian judoists also performed very well. They got 5 different medals.

B At the Winter Paralympic Games in Sochi, which took place from 7 to 23 of February, the Russian team won 33 medals: 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals. It is the best result in the history of participation in the Olympic Games. Russian sportsmen took part in all 15 sports that were presented in the Olympic programme. Most medals were won by figure skaters and skiers (5 different medals in each sport). Besides, sportsmen took part in short-track speed skating. Victor Ahn won 3 gold and one bronze medals.
