John: Hi, Yura. That’s John speaking. I’m calling from New York.
Yura: Hi, John. Did you say New York? What are you doing there?
John: My family are in America now. My father is here on business, but we are having a real holiday. We came to New York yesterday and stayed at a big hotel. We have been doing the city since morning.
Yura: That’s great. What is New York like?
John: People call it “The Big Apple” and the city is really big. Its streets are long and straight and the houses are so high.
Yura: I’d like to see New York’s world-famous skyscrapers some day. How long are you going to stay there?
John: I’m afraid we can stay here only for some days. We are going to Washington, D.C. at the end of the week. I’ll ring you up on Friday.
Yura: Do, please, and will you send me a postcard from New York?
Jоhn: I certainly will. Bye.
Yura: Bye, thank you for calling.

Nastya: Yes, Jane. How are you there in America?
Jane: I’m fine. We are having wonderful weather here in Washington.
Nastya: Are you in Washington, D. C. now?
Jane: I’m. I’m calling you from the Potomac Hotel, which is in the centre of the capital.
Nastya: That’s wonderful! Do you like Washington?
Jane: I don’t know. We came here yesterday night. I hope to see the city this afternoon. My father has come here to do some business and has taken me with him.
Nastya: Are you going to see the White House and the Capitol?
Jane: We are. Father says he’ll take me to the city centre in the afternoon when he comes back from work.
Nastya: I’m happy for you. I hope I’ll be able to see the White House some day, maybe next year. Are you going to take pictures?
Jane: I’m. I’ll send you the best ones when they are ready.
Nastya: Thanks and bye.

Teacher: I know that you have just come back from different English-speaking countries. Tell me where you have been. What can you say about the places you have visited? Kate, would you like to begin?
Кate: I have been to Canada. It is a large country in North America. It is the world’s second largest country. Only Russia is bigger. It is the country which is bilingual. For many people English and French are native languages. By the way Canada has one of the highest standards of living in the world. I have been to the capital of Canada. It’s Ottawa.
Teacher: What about you, Mike?
Mike: Oh, I was not far from Kate all the time. I was in North America too, but in a different country. It borders on Canada. I was there with my parents. We didn’t visit any big cities. We spent a week in California, on its sandy beaches.
Teacher: And you, Sergey, where have you been?
Sergey: I’ve been to England. I have visited Scotland too. We stayed in London for four days and I was able to see Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. It was really fantastic!
Teacher: Good. Now, what can Stella tell us about her trip?
Stella: I have been to the most faraway English-speaking country from Europe. It is a very unusual country which is a continent and an island at the same time. It is the country which is hot and dry too. In some parts of it it doesn’t rain for years. The kangaroo, the animal that everybody knows lives there. It is a very interesting country, popular with tourists. We wanted to go to New Zealand too but didn’t.

Australian Cities
There are six states in Australia and each of them has a large city which is usually near a river and near the sea. Most people live in these cities.
Sydney is one of them. It is the oldest and the biggest city in Australia. It is a busy modern city with tall buildings. It is also an international city where you can find food from all over the world or just visit some of the thirty fantastic beaches.
When people think of Sydney, they often think of the Sydney Opera House. The roof of this beautiful building looks like sails. The Opera House opened in 1973 for music, theatre performances and dance. Near the Opera House is one of the longest bridges in the world.
Melbourne, the second biggest city in Australia, was the capital of the country for 26 years, from 1901 to 1927. It has wide streets, some lovely old buildings and parks. Melbourne’s an important place for sport.
Canberra is the capital of Australia. The meaning of the word is “meeting place”. Canberra is the newest city of all. And it is rather far from the sea. You should drive 120 kilometres to get from Canberra to the sea- beach. Canberra became Australia’s capital in 1927. This beautiful city has thousands of trees and a big lake in the centre.
Perth is a sea port. Many people who live in Perth have a boat. They think it is the most beautiful Australian city, very much like South California cities.

What Do We Know about Australia?
Sam: Have you had a nice evening?
Tom: Yes, I’ve just finished watching a very interesting film on TV.
Sam: Really? What was it about?
Tom: About the largest island in the world.
Sam: The largest island? Do you mean Australia?
Tom: I do. Australia is the largest island on our planet, but I know that many people think it is a continent.
Sam: Right. That’s what I think: it is the smallest continent.
Tom: And it is a country too.
Sam: I know that. Australia is a country situated on the continent which is also Australia. What is its capital? Is it Sydney?
Tom: No. It’s Canberra, but Sydney is the largest city in the country. And it is the oldest city too.
Sam: What language do they speak in Australia?
Tom: English. But Australian English is different from the language they speak in the USA and Britain.
Step 8

1. Hello, my name is Jim. Last summer I went to the USA with an old friend of mine. His name is Ron. Ron lives in one of the states in a small town that lies on the Mississippi River. When I saw the river, it was like a shock to me. It flowed so powerful and mighty, so beautiful. Our British rivers are beautiful too, but they are not so large. I’ll remember it as long as I live.
2. Hi, I’m Robert. When I was 15 or 16 years old, I went to America with a school trip. We wanted to see the Grand Canyon, you know, the world-famous canyon 350 kilometres long and some kilometres deep. I remember how we stood there looking down the canyon and thought: “It’s incredible. It’s one of the most fantastic things I have ever seen.”
3. I’m Fred and I’d like to tell you about my journey that I had some time ago. I remember going to the Lakes on the border of the USA and Canada. My father took me there to fish. I was quite young then. But I remember how much I enjoyed being there fishing and boating with my dad. I think it was the best summer in my life. I hope to go back to that wonderful place some day.
Step 9

My name is Paul Davis. I’m a teacher at the International Language School in Oxford. Oxford is my native city. Our school is rather new but it is already quite popular. A lot of boys and girls come here from different countries of the world. They usually stay in Oxford for two weeks. In the mornings and afternoons they have English classes. In the evenings they sometimes visit picture galleries, museums and historic places. I think they enjoy it. Most of them are good motivated students and pleasant to teach. My group has nine students from five different countries of Europe and Asia. Anna, a very talented girl, comes from Munich, Germany. Her English is very good but she has problems with grammar. She has already made friends with Julia, a French girl from Lyon. Julia’s English is not so good but Anna often helps her friend and the girls speak English after classes. Which is very good for their English. Chris is from France too. He is interested in sport and watches a lot of sports programmes on TV. But Chris is not hard-working and his English is getting better very slowly. Max and Nina come from Russia. They are true theatregoers and often go out to enjoy performances. We have had a lot of Russian students lately. Swen and Martha come from Norway. They work very well. Dan and Lee are from China. They pronounce English words a little strangely but they are very good at learning English poems and they understand English speech very easily. It is their first visit to Oxford. They are my best students.
Step 10
Аудиозапись № 57 к заданию 1
Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon, the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there to see the beauty of the place with your own eyes. The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon during millions of years. One side of the canyon is higher than the other, so there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The south side is dry desert country. The north side has tall forests.
The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather. In the morning and in the evening the red, gold, brown and orange colours are very clear and bright. In winter there is snow lying in some parts of the canyon.
Every part of the canyon looks different. The north side is quiet. It takes all day to drive there from south side because there is only one bridge over the Colorado River. The south side is a busier place. Most visitors stay here in campings and hotels.
You can walk down into the Grand Canyon. People have to carry a lot of water because it is very hot down there. Some tourists take a boat trip down the Colorado River and enjoy the beauty of the place from the water.
